Revitalization of the Old Silk Factory, Geroskipou, Cyprus
In the center of Geroskipou, a township adjacent to Paphos the revitalization of the Old Silk Factory transforms a historic industrial compound into a cultural and mixed-use hub. Located at the intersection of the town’s historic civic (Cardo) and commercial (Decumanus) axes, the site links the old town with cultural landmarks, municipal buildings, and future urban extensions. The plan , free of vehicular traffic is limited to the perimeter, reinforcing walkability and visual connectivity integrating preserved heritage structures with contemporary interventions to create a cohesive and flexible framework for mixed activities.
The historic buildings are adapted for public and cultural uses, while new facilities house educational programs, student housing, health-related services, and commercial activities, these income producing functions sustain the cultural and non-profit initiatives. The design offers a central square to unite the site’s cultural and mixed-use zones, with pedestrian and cycling connections extending into the surrounding township’s fabric. Maintaining the industrial character of the site while introducing low-rise contemporary structures and landscaped courtyards. The design creates a vibrant and inclusive public environment where heritage and modernity coexist.
